Yet again we witness how after billions of years of slow evolution to the brain’s present size some 250,000 years ago, a stone age culture prevailed: that is, up to and until just a few thousand years ago, when a new way of thinking evolved and was introduced, i.e. a capacity to think logically and in abstract terms and which is the very fulcrum of coping. Reading, writing and thus effective communication of complex thought also evolved by courtesy of the brain’s left hemisphere. Now – and for the first time – problem-solving via language and communication, intuition and ideation, came together and the potential power of hypothesis, i.e. a capacity to test with the full force of the intellect, became a reality.
Computers (sometimes derisively referred to as “idiot machines}, are nevertheless wonderful inventions, which can compute, left brain tasks in series more than one million times faster. But there again, photographic and ‘holistic’ memory, which are being predicted (if only in crude and primitive form) for the future of computing, are never likely to be a match for the right brain, which can at a glance and in an instant capture, record and interpret an unquantifiable amount and quality of information about mood, meaning, purpose, hope, threat, motivation, to name but a few.
Let me conclude this blog with a further hypothesis if I may; nothing more in fact than a simple and informal “what if?” What if, as we move relentlessly on through time – and just as the humankind’s quantum leap forward was made possible, at least in part, by right/left hemisphere “synergy” (partnership) – we are moving toward a new and ever more exciting synergy of ever richer vistas of purpose, priority and power. And what if we are about to emerge from the long shadows which have hitherto concealed not only much of man’s purpose and meaning, but also his destiny; i.e. toward spiritual realization, accomplishment and maturity?
